Lesson 4. Corrugated cardboard bending techniques
In this lesson, we examine how to perform various types of bends in sheet corrugated cardboard for different tasks
Cardboard Bending Techniques
It is best to bend cardboard from the wrong (ribbed/textured) side—this reduces the risk of cracking. However, the choice depends on the design intent.
Bending Methods:
Straight Bend Along the Flutes: Score the bend line with a closed cutter or use a ruler as a guide.
Smooth Curve: Roll the part into a tube/roll or form the curve by pressing the part against the edge of a table.
Bend Across the Flutes: Score a line with a closed cutter along a ruler to create an indentation, then bend.
Curved Bends: It's better to break down the curve into a series of straight lines, creating a polygonal (faceted) bend, which adds strength and aesthetics.
